Postgraduate Supervision Enrichment Winter School
'4IR pedagogy in postgraduate supervision' is the focus of the UJ Postgraduate School's planned week-long Supervision Enrichment Winter School, due to take place from 6 – 12 July 2020. The Winter School will provide an opportunity for both novice and experienced supervisors to engage with issues pertaining to postgraduate supervision in the era of artificial intelligence, systems thinking and cross-disciplinary research. This topic has been chosen to highlight the need for the development of a changing postgraduate research supervision pedagogy that promotes 4IR readiness in UJ graduates. This is in response to the realisation that graduates in the 4IR need to have intellectual flexibility, be adaptable and acquire the ability to deal with complexity so that they can respond to the tensions that accompany the exponentially accelerating rate of technological innovation. In addition, they should have control of digital research and communication tools and cultivate critical awareness of the ethical, social and intercultural dilemmas that result from rapid change.
In light of the current COVID-19 situation, the Postgraduate Supervision Enrichment Winter School will most probably have to be postponed. The Research Capacity Development unit is hoping to host it later in the year instead, when the situation has improved.
