The Postgraduate Supervision Enrichment Winter School offered by the Postgraduate School, University of Johannesburg, will provide enrichment and extension to UJ, national and regional colleagues. The week’s programme is facilitated by experienced senior academics who teach on UJ’s Postgraduate Supervision Programme, as well as internationally recognised experts in research and supervision. The Winter School programme includes plenary speakers and interactive Masterclasses on key aspects of postgraduate research supervision. There will be opportunities for networking, discussion, and sharing of resources. 

Enrolments are limited to 40 candidates in order to provide for engagement and to encourage a community of practice. 


Keynote Speakers include:

  • Dr Ahmad Bawa: CEO Universities South Africa. ‘What’s key for postgraduates: advice to supervisors’ 
  • Prof Anitra Nettleton: Emeritus Professor University of the Witwatersrand. ‘What is creativity? How do we think about this in research?’ 
  • Prof Sioux McKenna: Rhodes University. ‘Publish and Perish: The perils of supervising in an age of performance metrics’  
  • Prof Joe Krajcik: Michigan State University: ‘International perspectives on postgraduate supervision’  
  • Prof Sarah Howie: University of Stellenbosch. ‘Mixed-methods research’


Programme includes:

Researcher competencies in an African context; Decolonising postgraduate pedagogy; Academic literacies; Thesis writing; Assessment in Supervision; Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods Research; Coaching and mentoring; Expectations and the Student perspective; Ethical concerns and complexities; Communication and dissemination of research and research impact.


Purpose of the programme 

To provide supervisors with a structured introduction to supervision issues, processes and practices, and to offer exposure to research-informed best practice and emerging trends, in order to facilitate reflection on their own supervision practices and professional growth.


Who should attend?

The programme is aimed at current and aspiring supervisors of postgraduate students who could be:

  • University academic staff preferably with a PhD and with a minimum of a Masters' degree,
  • Post-Doctoral Research Fellows

Costs: 

  •  UJ Staff: fee exempted for full programme registration 
  • External delegates: R3000 full programme registration 
  • External delegates: daily registration R1000 per day 
  • Please note that travel and accommodation costs are not included and are for the delegates own arrangement 
  • Enrolment deadline: 26 June 2019
