They are measured on a range of outcomes, including teaching and research, industry links and an international outlook among others.

Of the 440 universities ranked, the universities of Cape Town, Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch, Pretoria, KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg (UJ) made it into the top 100.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) came in at nine, University of the Witwatersrand(Wits) at 11, University of Stellenbosch at 24, University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) at 49, University of Pretoria (UP) 78 and University of Johannesburg (UJ) 99.

“We have an internationalisation strategy, which is consolidating our international outlook. The number of our international students is increasing, we hope to have 5000 by 2020. It’s a steep objective but one we are determined to meet. Our research agenda is growing faster than any other university in South Africa in terms of research output,” says Prof Marwala.
