Visually impaired judoka Jacque Joubert takes bronze at IBSA Judo Grand Prix

Jacque Joubert, a University of Johannesburg (UJ) judoka, was one of three world heavyweights who claimed podium finishes at the 2022 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Judo Grand Prix in Brazil earlier in July 2022. Joubert settled for a bronze medal in the 90kg category.

The Philomath, who intends to pursue doctoral studies soon, is a member of the UJ Sports for Students with Disabilities (SSD).

The event took place at Brazilian Paralympics Centre, organised through the Brazilian Confederation of Sports for the visually impaired from 29 June to 1 July 2022. He participated in Visually Impaired Judo (VI Judo) against two Judo players from France and the United States of America who won medals at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Joubert is a BA Sports Psychology, BA Hons in Sport Science, and a postgraduate in PGCE- Further Education and Training Teaching graduate. On 24 June 2022, he recently submitted his MPhil in Sport Science dissertation, titled “Coaches with a disability coaching in a South African context”, to the ethics committee for evaluation.

The Judoka is considering studying a doctoral degree.

“Jacque has been an elite judo player and SSD athlete since 2013. We hope to see him on many, future podiums on the world,” said Lezanne Bruwer, Manager: UJ Sport for Students with Disabilities (SSD).
