UJ’s Prof David Boucher elected as Vice-President of the prestigious Learned Society of Wales

Prof David Boucher has been elected as vice-president of the prestigious Learned Society for Wales (LSW), a keenly competed accolade which recognises academic excellence.

Professor David Boucher, Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has been elected Vice-President of the Learned Society of Wales , UK. Prof Boucher will assume the office of vice president on Wednesday, 17 May 2017.

Prof Boucher’s research focuses on Modern Political Theory, History of Political Thought, Theory of International Relations, Human Rights, Collingwood and British Idealism, and Popular Culture. He recently published a book called Dylan and Cohen: Poets of Rock and Roll. His research of both singers is part of his on-going commitment to the politics of popular culture, the most recent manifestations of which are a number of articles that he has written on Bob Dylan, The Beats and Dylan Thomas.

‘I have been closely involved with the work of the Learned Society for six years, benefiting greatly from discussions with distinguished Fellows. It is a great honour to assume a position of leadership in promoting the arts and social sciences in Wales and the academic community generally’, said Prof Boucher.

LSW is Wales’ first national academy of science and letters. Established in 2010, the Society draws upon the considerable strengths of over 400 distinguished Fellows based in Wales, the UK and beyond. The society provides public benefit including expert scholarly advice on a variety of public policy issues related to science, engineering, medicine, arts, humanities and social sciences.

Prof Boucher is a fellow of the Learned Society and has served previously on its Council and General Purposes Committee prior to becoming Vice-President.

The Society now has more than 420 Fellows, distinguished men and women from all branches of learning who are prominent figures within their respective academic disciplines or professions.
