Date: May 5, 2016 | News

The Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences (MIRS) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) unveiled a new multi-use creative technology space – an upgrade of the 6411 venue, located at the University’s John Orr Building, in Doornfontein Campus.

“Virtual teaching in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences is an essential part of teaching as students are being prepared for Work Integrated Learning (WIL),” says Mr Sibusiso Mdletshe, Head of the Department of Medical Imaging & Radiation Science. “This is also in line with UJ’s strategy for the use of Technology for teaching.”

The newly refurbished venue made possible through the use of the Clinical Training Grant that the Faculty of Health Sciences received from the Department of Higher Education and Training, will allow virtual teaching of students using special software, enhancing their understanding of the theoretical work while ensuring that they are prepared adequately for WIL. It will also be used for assessment purposes in line with the use of technology for teaching, learning and assessment.

The lab housing 60 computers with internet access will start operating in the second term of 2016. It also features wireless access points, surveillance cameras, dividers between each station and an extra electrical outlet, benefiting not only students but other departments within the faculty will also have access to the facility on a booked basis.
