UJ’s BA Sports Psychology student prepares for World Powerlifting Championships

Terence Ricardo Bosman, a University of Johannesburg (UJ) BA Sports Psychology student, has qualified for the World powerlifting championships. The competition will take place from 18 June until 26 June 2016 in Killeen, Texas, United States of America (USA).

The IPF​ powerlifting championships sees the best lifters from around the world competing head to head in their categories. These championships are RAW championships, the Federation allows no supportive gear to be worn by the lifter only a single-ply tight polyester singlet and belt may be worn. These championships are also a drug free competition whereby no lifters are allowed any banned substances. This rule is enforced with rand drug testing.
“These news came as a shock to me as I did not realise that my strength was of world standard,” says Bosman. “It is a massive honour to be representing my country, wearing the green and gold while competing against the best lifters in the world.”
Bosman only started powerlifting in February 2016 and qualified in March 2016, a big achievement.
The South African Championships were held at the Elgro Hotel in Potchefstroom during March 2016. Bosman was placed fifth in the open category and was SA’s youngest lifter to compete in the category he completed in. His final lifts totalled 635kg which comprised of a 270kg deadlift, 235kg back squat and a 130kg bench press.
