UJ’s Art Gallery exhibition to honour local South African Hero

Details of the event:
Venue: FADA Gallery, University of Johannesburg, Bunting Rd Campus, Bunting Rd, Auckland Park
Time: 19 Jul at 6pm

This year’s UJ Alumni Exhibition will honour Doctor Carol Hofmeyr, the founder of the Keiskamma Art Project Trust on Thursday, 19 July 2018 at FADA Gallery, Bunting Road Campus Auckland Park.

The Trust is a community organisation, based in Hamburg, a rural area in the Eastern Cape, which works to foster hope and offer support for the vulnerable. The Trust strives to address the challenges of widespread poverty and disease through holistic and creative programmes and partnerships.

“This Alumni Exhibition, honouring Dr Carol Hofmeyr, is of particular importance because it highlights the diverse roles of an artist, with multiple creative skills and empathy, for the plight of the rural community,” says Eugene Hon, the curator.

The Keiskama Trust began as the Keiskama Art Project, created by doctor and artist, Hofmeyr, in response to the extreme poverty and high percentage of HIV/AIDS affected families in the area. The Keiskamma Art Project later became the Keiskamma Trust inclusive of an Art, Health and Education Programme. In 2006 Helen Vosloo, one of the country’s foremost classical musicians, founded the Keiskamma Music Academy as the fourth Trust programme.

We hope this Alumni exhibition will highlight the value of art education in a fast and changing global society, in which creative thinking can be applied to every aspect of work and more importantly improve the quality of people’s lives.
