UJ ties a bond with students

​​​​​A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. This is the message to thousands of first-year students admitted to register at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) for studies in 2014.​​

Students will be strutting bright orange branded UJ shoelaces, after attending an informative and compulsory First Year Seminar programme. These shoelaces are a reminder of UJ’s commitment to support its first-time entering students during their transition from school to university and that UJ will walk their journey with them. The First Year Seminar kicked off on Monday, 20 January 2014.

Included in the First Year Seminar programme is the Dean’s Welcome address, academic orientation to the Faculty, the Department and the specific programmes for which students have been accepted. A variety of events are held to orient new students with campus life and the wide range of academic development and support services the University offers. Students also learn about the dedicated team looking after their safety and about the services available to them via the Health Clinics situated on each campus. They also get to meet lecturers, receive their time tables and get to know their fellow students and the campus they will be studying on.

UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Ihron Rensburg will be opening the University’s 2014 Academic year at the Ellis Park Arena on Friday, 31 January.

Landi Raubenheimer, Contextual studies lecturer and UJ coordinator says: “Orientation is about giving the first-year students some of the tools that they need to be able to survive the first couple of weeks at UJ. They must be comfortable and know that there is support, and to get an idea on how university structures work, which might be new to them.”
