UJ Mining Students reach out to Doornfontein orphanage

University of Johannesburg (UJ) Mining Forum students, who study at the Department of Mining Engineering, reached out to an orphanage very close to their campus. On Friday, 6 May 2016, the Mining forum presented a number of donations to management of the Ethembeni Children’s home in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, in recognition and gratitude of the role they play in enriching community life.
Ethembeni Children’s home was established in 1985 to accommodate babies who were abandoned by their mothers and HIV positive. The home can accommodate 61 babies & toddlers between ages 0 – 3 years.
“We are very grateful. This was a very satisfying experience bringing smiles on children’s faces for a brief period. We’ve realised that one must contribute and understand his/her social responsibilities towards society,” says Mr Edward Monyollo, Project Manager at the UJ Mining Forum.
The Mining Forum programme is one of several fostering relationships between the University and welfare homes such as the Ethembeni Children’s Home.
“It was really moving to see babies and infants, some with HIV and most of them abandoned,” added Monyollo
