UJ Law Master’s students accepted at Cornell University

Two Master’s students, Ms Arifa Mohammadali-Haji and Mr Lebina Phukuile, both from the Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will be travelling to Cornell Law School, United States of America (USA) during June and August 2017.

Ms Mohammadali-Haji, has been awarded a visiting research fellowship for a few months and Mr Phukuile will form part of the general Master of Laws (LLM) class for a year.

When asked how she feels about her upcoming endeavours Ms Mohammadali-Haji said: “I feel immensely grateful and honoured to have this opportunity to connect, on a formal footing, with Cornell Law School and its remarkable academic community”.

Cornell University has an official cooperation and exchange agreement with the Faculty of Law at UJ. The objective of the agreement is to establish a flexible framework for academic collaboration, as well as faculty and student exchanges, between both Institutions.

Within the memorandum of Agreement with Cornell, Prof Elizabeth Brundige, assistant Dean for International Programs at Cornell stated: “We are so grateful for our partnership with the University of Johannesburg and we look forward to our continued collaboration.”

According to Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, Executive Dean: UJ Law, “The Faculty encourages and supports students and staff to collaborate in a broad range of projects such as international travel for research and conferences.”

Cornell Law School has a long history of, and strong institutional emphasis on, international and comparative legal studies. The school maintains international focus to this day through a robust collection of international and comparative law degree programs, study abroad opportunities, on-campus programs, and exchange programs for foreign nationals interested in studying at Cornell.
