UJ hosts Sustainable Energy and World of Work event

On Thursday 29 August 2019, the Department of Geography, Environmental Management and Energy Studies hosted the United Nations International Development Organization’s Sustainable Energy and the World of Work event at UJ.

The energy industry is one of the most dynamic in the world. Fueled by ongoing innovation and technological advances, it is rapidly changing and requires skills in areas such as science, engineering, finance, economics, business, policy, law, marketing, and journalism. This also means there are many interesting job opportunities in energy.

Speakers from UNIDO set the scene with presentations about the current energy landscape in South Africa, how it is rapidly changing, and the need for more women to work in the industry. The UNIDO staff provided advice on how to be successful when applying for jobs. Mr Monde Tyasha, Managing Director of Egoli Gas, and Ms Philile Dlamini from the Gauteng Energy Office, spoke about their careers paths in energy. Lastly, Prof Roula Inglesi-Lotz, President of the South African Association of Energy Economics, introduced the association and its benefits. The session was concluded with networking and refreshments, where students had the opportunity to engage with professionals already working in the energy field. The event was attended by over 100 students.

Congratulations to Kagiso Kobue, who won free attendance at the first South African Association of Energy Economics first annual conference!
