UJ disability infrastructure gets stamp of approval

The Deputy Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities (DWCPD), Hendrietta Ipeleng Bogopane-Zulu, visited the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Wednesday, 7 November 2012 to review UJ’s accessibility to staff and students with disabilities.

Bogopane-Zulu’s visit highlights the significant role DWCPD plays in implementing a 2% target of staff and students with disabilities by March 2013 at tertiary institutions which is driven by in President Zuma.

“November marks Disability Rights Month. Today, aside from looking at what UJ is already doing for people with disabilities; we will also assess UJ’s progress to meet this target set by the president, ” she said.

Bogopane-Zulu paid particular attention to the quality of students’ life at UJ and evaluated the policies, programmes and measures that have been put in place to accommodate the needs of those students with disabilities.

Bogopane-Zulu mentioned that UJ has been ranked amongst the best five universities that offer some services which adequately cater for students and staff with disabilities.

DWCPD aims to ensure that people with disabilities are well taken care of at universities – starting from the recruitment process in schools until they graduate from tertiary education institutions.​
