The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has seen a surge in its accredited academic research output. The University, which has set a goal to increase its accredited research output, has now achieved this and is ranked among South Africa’s Top 2 universities. This is according to the latest Research Outputs report released by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
The DHET report indicates an impressive growth in UJ’s research output and research productivity. See below:
Professor Saurabh Sinha, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Internationalisation, says many factors are driving UJ’s growth trajectory into the future. “Given that research remains vital for a university to contribute to national and global prosperity and is an important indicator of the stature of a university, UJ has made considerable investments in research within the University. This has resulted in the establishment and/or renewal of research niches, centres and focus groups across the natural, economic, financial and management sciences, engineering and the humanities, and technological and academic disciplines. This has in turn attracted some of the country’s leading minds and top postgraduate students,” says Prof Sinha.
“Furthermore, the field-weighted citation impact, a measure of research output quality, continues to be favourable.”
Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, says the results affirmed the University as among the country’s leading institutions of higher education with a high output in ground-breaking research in South Africa. “Research is one of the cornerstones of our university. The latest results should position UJ at the upper end of universities with middle-level research productivity, all of which, unlike UJ, have medical faculties with high publication outputs, and lower teaching responsibilities.”
