UJ and CoJ collaboration offers necessary skills for emergencies

Date: Nov 23, 2018 | News

The University of Johannesburg (UJ), in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), has recently collaborated in a number of safety and security initiatives to equip students with the necessary life skills. At the start of the 2018 second semester, the City offered UJ students a basic firefighting and first aid training at the four UJ campuses.

With fire incidents claiming lives in buildings that are either old or do not meet the safety requirements, this campaign promotes safety around the City to neutralise emergency cases. UJ and the City held the first graduation ceremony for the first cohort of students that completed the basic firefighting and first aid training. Guests from CoJ included Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, Councillor Michael Sun, and members of the City’s Emergency Medical Services and UJ officials.

Students learned how to conduct first aid training, which includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Councillor Sun encouraged the students to use the skills that they learned at the training to help their communities. Primary Health practitioner at UJ, Miemie Geya emphasised the importance of community leaders in collaborating with local institutions and other community forums to improve the quality of life for residents.

The next training on other important life-saving skills will take place on 28 and 29 November 2018 at all the University campuses. It is expected that training will take place at every recess period in the next year.
