Ten UJ subjects rated amongst the best in the world

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) welcomes the latest 2021 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings by Subject, released on 3 March 2021 in which it once again received global acknowledgement and affirmation of its world-class subject offerings, with ten of its subjects ranked amongst the best globally- three more than the previous year.
Most notably, UJ excelled in its top-performing subject, English Language & Literature, retaining its position among the top 250 universities globally (201-250 band) and placing joint third nationally,
In Physics & Astronomy, UJ climbed a band from 451-500 to 401-450 globally and moved up two notches from fourth position to be ranked second in South Africa, above the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. UJ further advanced its global position for Economics & Econometrics, moving up a band from 401-450 to 351-400 globally, and for Chemistry, moving up a band from 501-550 to 451-500 globally and placing joint third nationally, up two places from joint fifth position.
UJ debuted this year in two science subjects, Agriculture & Forestry and Environmental Sciences, entering in the 351-400 and 401-450 global bands, respectively, and re-emerged in the Education subject ranking table this year in the 301-350 band globally, since its last placement in the 2017 instalment.
Additionally, UJ was also ranked for Chemical Engineering (remained in the 301-350 band globally and placed joint third nationally, up from joint fourth position); Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (451-500 band globally) and Medicine (601-650 band globally).
These results are yet another testament to the University’s ongoing efforts in positioning UJ as an international university of choice, anchored in Africa, and dynamically shaping the future. As a young university in Africa, among the emerging economy countries, and in the Global South, UJ is proud to be recognised once again by the international community as being among the world’s leading institutions at which to study, specialise and conduct research in these subject fields.
