Seven UJ subjects ranked amongst the world’s best

The University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s academic prowess continues to receive worldwide recognition through inclusion in a prestigious global ranking system that rates subjects of the top universities worldwide.
Seven UJ subject fields – across engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences – have been highly recognised within the world’s Top 600 in the results of the 2020 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The subject areas ranked are as follows:
English Language and Literature: ranked in the 201-250 band in the world, joint third in South Africa and Africa, together with the University of Stellenbosch.
Chemical Engineering: ranked in the 301-350 band in the world, joint fourth in South Africa, together with the University of Pretoria (UP) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). This is the first time UJ has been ranked for this subject.
- Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing Engineering: ranked in the 401-450 band in the world, and fifth in South Africa.
- Economics & Econometrics: ranked in the 401-450 band in the world, joint fourth in South Africa, along with the University of the Witwatersrand.
Top 500 and Top 550
- Physics & Astronomy: ranked in the 451-500 band in the world, joint fourth in South Africa, along with the University of Stellenbosch.
- Chemistry: ranked in the 501-550 band in the world, joint fifth in South Africa, together with the University of the Witwatersrand.
Medicine: ranked in the 551-600 band in the world, joint seventh in South Africa, together with the University of the Western Cape. This is the first time UJ has been ranked for this subject.
Says Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UJ: “These rankings are yet another important endorsement of UJ’s growing international standing and a demonstration that the University is well on track to establish its global reputation as a place of research and academic repute.
“These results are received with great joy and celebration, as we continue to forge ahead with our resolve to position UJ as an international University of Choice, anchored in Africa, dynamically shaping the future.”
He thanked the university’s academics and researchers as well as support staff for their hard work and dedication.
