“Use your current situation, experiences and the resources at your disposal to create something of yourself. It is important to know your value and worth.” This was the message from popular disc jockey, musician, record label owner, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Sibusiso Leope aka DJ Sbu that inspired students at the University of Johannesburg.
DJ Sbu is visiting the University as part of the UJ Reads project, a project that encourages UJ employees and students to read the same book simultaneously. DJ Sbu is conducting discussion sessions at the University’s four campus libraries during his visit. The project started on Monday, 08 September and runs till Friday 12 September 2014.
Speaking at the University’s Auckland Park Kingsway Library, DJ Sbu pointed out that he have always tried to use platforms, such as radio and television, to inspire young people to take their futures into their own hands and improve their lives. “Young people need to understand how valuable they are to our society,” he said, “but they need to believe in themselves and invest in their talents and skills.”
The 34-year-old’s new book Leadership 2020: The Beginning tells the inspirational story of his journey to success and features contributions from local millionaire entrepreneur Tim Tebeila, CEO of the Shanduka Group Phuti Mahanyele and US motivational speaker Tony Gaskins.
“Leadership 2020 was inspired by my drive to influence the lives of others positively,” said DJ Sbu, who regularly visits township schools to give motivational talks and raises funds for bursaries and mentoring through the Sbu Leope Foundation (Slef) and Leadership 2020, which is an academy.
DJ Sbu concludes: “I am a survivor and an extremely determined individual. I’m inspired by life, people, the world and I do believe I can contribute in changing the world positively through my work. It’s my passion, and one’s passion eventually leads to your purpose. Purposeful living is what I’m doing now – making a living out of serving others. I have experienced even more success by dedicating my career to serving others.”
