Public Protector Thuli Madonsela engages with UJ students
Date: Apr 4, 2014 | News
On Friday, 04 April 2014, the Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, after meeting briefly with the University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal and members of the Management Executive Committee, Prof Ihron Rensburg, was warmly received by UJ student leaders in the UJ’s Council Chambers on its Kingsway Campus.
She visited the University to engage with the students as part of the University’s Young African Leadership Forum – an initiative that exposes UJ students and student leaders to leading and important voices in South Africa, in Africa and the world today.
This Forum is a platform where UJ students are trained to be leaders, and a platform for learning about leadership. In 2013, US President Barack Obama addressed young people on the continent as part of a Young African Leaders engagement at UJ’s Soweto Campus.
Advocate Madonsela addressed the students, pointing out that South Africa could have achieved a lot more over the past 20 years if it were not for maladministration and corruption.
The Public Protector’s talk focused on the importance of governance and adherence to ethical principles by leaders. She encouraged the students to exemplify the same level of ethics which they expect of their leaders, and highlighted that a code of ethics binds everyone who works for the state.
