Describing his sentiments upon reaching a significant life milestone, Nelson Mandela said:

“I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment…”

The University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Strategic Services, Professor Derek van der Merwe​ will be retiring from his position at the end of April 2014. Prof van der Merwe contributed greatly to the life and success of UJ. He takes a well-earned moment of rest.

An occasion for the University community to bid him farewell will be arranged later in the year. ​​
