Khanya Ncusane snatched by UK-based Samurai 7s rugby after his exploits for UJ in Uganda

The impressive performances of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) team that recently lifted the Kings of Africa 7s Rugby trophy for the second consecutive time in Uganda yielded positive outcomes post the tournament. Second-year Transport Management student and rugby player, Khanya Ncusane, was selected to join the UK-based Samurai 7s rugby team which played in the Safari 7s tournament in Kenya on 31 October 2021.

The Safari 7s tournament comprised 12 teams all competing for the top spot. They included; Spain, Germany, South Africa All Stars 7s Academy, Kenya Shujaa, Uganda, Kenya Morans, Zimbabwe, Samurai, Red Wailers, KCB, Stallion Sevens Nigeria and Chipu.

Speaking on his selection, Ncusane says, “At first, I was very nervous because I have always known that the Samurai is a very well-established club with some of the greatest 7s legends. So, for me to get an invite to play for them was very special. The experience was beyond what I could imagine. I learned a lot and enjoyed every minute of it.”

He played 5 of the 6 Samurai matches. He was participating for the first time in the tournament. The team finished finished in 7th position.

“It was a complete honor to be one of the three South Africans selected for the Samurai 7s team. This selection and playing in the tournament was not just for me, but my family too,” adds Ncusane.

In the past, Ncusane has represented the South African Under18 rugby team. As a youngster, he played for the Golden Lions, Paarl Boys Primary School and Paarl Boys High School. He joined UJ 7s rugby team in July 2021.

Ncusane says he has settled well in the UJ rugby camp. “UJ rugby has had its up and downs, but the love and passion I get from everyone representing the Orange Army is unmatched,” he says.
