Experts in the fields of informatics and computer science, law, politics and philosophy from all over the globe gathered at Germany’s Saar University from the 8 – 19 August for a summer school themed “IT Law and Legal Informatics”. The Summer School, hosted by the Institute of Legal Informatics is an international and multidisciplinary conference with a focus on legal aspects of the 4IR such as, IT Security and Internet of Things; Data and the law; Artificial Intelligence and Legal Technology.

Our very own lecturer at the Department of Practical Business Law, Ms Nazreen Ismail was at the summer school as a contributing participant and presented on selected aspects of the South African Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013, which was well received. Renowned legal IT specialists presented on liability issues for artificial intelligence systems, the possibilities of regulating artificial intelligence and the IT law dimension of data.

Apart from the lectures and presentations, the Summer School included tours and excursions of various landmarks within the region. The highlight for most participants was the visit to the Bundesverfassungsgericht (Federal Constitutional Court) in Karlsruhe and a visit of the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Nazreen was also interviewed about her participation in the Summer School by a local newspaper in the region.
