It is excavation season at the P-RI!
Date: Jul 11, 2022 | Palaeo-Research Institute
Our Team ( Prof Marlize Lombard and Drs Matt Caruana and Matt Lotter) is currently on one of our many field sites, Wonderboom located in the Magalies range outside of Pretoria, South Africa. It is an earlier Stone Age site (probably dating to between 800,000 and 600,000 years ago) which is much richer in archaeological material than any other in the greater Cradle region. The site was discovered in 1950 and was thought to have been used, possibly by Homo erectus, to ambush/hunt animals moving through the poort. The current excavation season aims to extract data which will enable researchers to test a hypothesis by re-analysing the stone artefacts, and conducting a drone-based landscape analysis of the site. Watch this space for more on this site!
