High level UJ delegation fosters international collaboration in Brazil

Date: Apr 2, 2015 | News

A high level team led by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Prof Ihron Rensburg, consisting of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Postgraduate Studies and the Library; Executive Deans; Executive Directors and academics, is visiting Brazil as part of UJ’s expanded international focus to foster relationships with higher education institutions.

This collaboration visit to South America forms part of the University’s 2025 Strategy to establish UJ as a key change agent on the African continent. During the visit to Brazil the delegation will open doors with the University of São Paulo; the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul; the State University of Campinas and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Making a call for closer ties between the universities, the 14 member UJ delegation’s discussions will be centred on academic cooperation and collaboration through the scholarship of teaching and learning programmes; joint research and development projects; student and lecture exchange programmes; postgraduate supervision and examination ventures; study abroad programmes and international student recruitment.

The establishment of specific partnerships with institutions in Brazil is especially significant as Brazil is part of the BRICS economic bloc, along with Russia, China, India and South Africa. These countries face similar challenges and joint academic enquiry would eventually benefit these countries and bring solutions to 21st century global challenges.

UJ’s delegation embarked on the visit to Brazil on 28 March 2015.

The visit to Brazil, will be followed to visits to higher education institutions in Chile and Mexico.
