UJ second-year Biochemistry students enjoyed a unique learning experience when they visited the National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa during a field trip organised by Dr Edwin Madala.

The senior lecturer of biochemistry said it was important for students to get industry exposure. “The lab does doping studies to identify illicit drugs/performance enhancers. During this visit, the students also asked if they could also do vocational work there. I would like see students seeing the bigger picture. The bigger picture is them going to the industry to apply what they have been taught in class.”

The students were exposed to cutting-edge instrumentation such as liquid chromatography hyphenated to mass spectrometry.
