The Design Indaba
The Design Indaba Conference is a showcase of 3 days that presents the best creative minds from around the world. The Design Indaba features a programme called The Emerging Creatives which looks at up-and-coming designers and their innovative ideas. This year the Design Indaba featured four of UJ’s very own as emerging creatives: Lindsay Dhludhlu, Karma Elston, Zoe Groenwald and Kate Rees. Their participation was recognised and they were offered great opportunities to further their careers. Lindsay was at the Johannesburg Simulcast and received a contract with Woolworths. Karma was in Cape Town and, based on her previous work, was commissioned to do some portraits for Cameron van der Burgh. Zoe got a contract with Mercedes Benz to design Key chains due to her attendance. They each gave me an idea of their experiences and how attending impacted their lives. Being featured as Emerging Creatives, they had interesting individual experiences and have had The Design Indaba impact their lives in one way or another.

Participation Design Unit
This year the Communication Design Honours students took part in a project called Participation Design Unit. The aim of the project is to explore the role that human-centred graphic design plays in community projects. On the first day of the study year we all boarded a bus and were taken to different locatito meet with possible clients that we could design for. The first place we visited was the University of Johannesburg Solar Lab. The UJ Solar lab is the physical space in which the UJ team works and thinks of projects and solutions to their challenges.
