On the 27th of September 2016, academic achievement, ambition and creative flair were some of the judging criteria that took centre stage when six University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) students were honoured for being one of South Africa’s finest minds at the 2016 GradStar awards.

Undergraduate students Anisa Mazimpaka, Anoziva Gumbie, Melanie Powell, Prince Motope, Tshepo Magoma and Prishanta Sewpaul from across various faculties at UJ were named amongst the Top 100 students in South Africa with potential as Future Leaders.

“Being a UJ student helped me tremendously by providing me with the leadership opportunities and skills needed for the GradStar Awards initiative,” said Prishanta Sewpaul, a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and one of the honorees.  “I thank the University for exposing us to such great initiatives and career opportunities.”

The GradStar programme looks at the Top 100 university students across South Africa and connects them with potential employers, as well as business mentors who will assist them in getting ready for the workplace. The programme gives participating employers unique access to the top students of the country who also compliment their existing placement initiatives.

Candidates went through a rigorous four phase judging process, which culminated in employer workshops at the main event held on the 27th of September 2016.

The purpose of the awards night is to bring the major stakeholders from the graduate recruitment industry, senior leaders of institutions, career practitioners and human resource professionals from South Africa’s largest companies with the next generation of future leaders, who are about to commence their final year of study and are looking to make their first career move.

Entries for the 2017 Gradstar Awards will open soon. Visit www.gradstar.co.za for more information.
