UJ Statement on the Passing of Professor Russel Botman – Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University

​​The untimely death of Professor Russel Botman – Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stellenbosch - in the early hours of Saturday the 28th of June 2014 has deeply shocked the higher education sector at home and abroad. Through his tremendous contributions to scholarship and his exemplary leadership, Professor Botman has left an indelible mark in the higher education sector.​​​​​

The Chairperson of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Council, Prof Roy Marcus; the Chancellor of the University, Prof Njabulo Ndebele; the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UJ, Professor Ihron Rensburg; together with the entire UJ community of staff, students and alumni send our deepest condolences to Ms Beryl Botman, the children, the entire Botman family and the University of Stellenbosch at large.

May his spirit continue to inspire us to tackle our responsibilities with great effort, enduring until our tasks are accomplished, and until we can create an inclusive, diverse and caring society.
