About Sven Botha
Sven Botha is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Prior to his appointment as an Assistant Lecturer, Sven served as a Tutor and Head Tutor in the Department. His teaching includes theMilitarisation of Politics and International Law and Gender amongst other areas in Political Science and International Relations. He has worked and published on the following areas: terrorism, counter-terrorism, gender, foreign policy, diplomacy, security issues in the Global South as well as early-career development in the Social Sciences.
Sven holds a Bachelor of Social Science in Political and International Studies (Summa Cum Laude) from Monash University, a BA Honours (Politics and International Relations) with distinction from UJ and is currently furthering his postgraduate studies at UJ where he specialises in a vast array of issues related to terrorism, extremism and the responses to these phenomena including, but not limited to: counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, countering violent extremism and preventing violent extremism. Sven’s research and teaching have yield many accolades including: the Gershon and Rose Hasen Prize (awarded by the Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University), the Sir John Monash Medal (awarded by the Faculty of Arts at Monash University), a Top Achiever Awarded for the BA Honours degree (awarded by the Faculty of Humanities at UJ) and a Top Tutor Award (awarded by the Faculty of Humanities at UJ) among others.
Sven holds membership to the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS), the South African Institute of International Affairs and the Consortium for Regional Integration and Social Cohesion-Social Elevation (RISC-RISE) serving on the SAAPS Executive Council from 2019-2021 as well asthe chairperson of the SAAPS Research Committee for Early-Career Research (2019-2021). He is also an associate with the African Studies Centre at Leiden University (since 2018).
Sven has been fortunate to present his research on both a local and international level with presentationstalkslectures being given at variousconferences and institutions including: Monash South Africa, the University of Johannesburg, the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape, the University of the Free State and the Diplomatic Training Academy at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). Sven also represented South Africa as a member of the SAAPS delegation present at 43rd Conference of the British International Studies Association where he delivered a talk on the incorporation of soft power into Africa’s responses to terrorism.
At present, Sven is working on the development of an array of teaching and learning mechanisms including a textbook, a book series, and the introduction of postgraduate courses in gender and politics as well as responses to terrorism. Sven also facilitates the RISC-RISE Masters Forum.
