Dr Estherna Pretorius obtained her MSc degree (Biodiversity and Conservation) in 2011 from the University of Johannesburg. In 2022, the PhD Botany degree was conferred upon her with the main thesis focus being DNA barcoding and phytochemical analysis in quality control of herbal medicine: a case study of devil’s claw (Harpagophytum spp) and buchu (Agathosma spp). She has presented various papers at national and international conferences and published multiple peer-reviewed international journal articles with a focus on DNA barcoding use as an authentication technique, and related disciplines.
Estherna has been associated with the University of Johannesburg as an academic staff member since 2009. She is a passionate lecturer with over 10 years of experience in teaching a variety of biological science and related subjects. Her core teaching competency is Life Sciences, and she currently lectures Life Sciences 1 for FET teachers and Life Sciences 2 for FET teachers. Prior to her appointment at Botany, she was a First-Year Experience Coordinator in the Faculty of Science and responsible for the First Year Seminar that was offered to the students of the Faculty of Science (APK/DFC), FEBE and Education at the University of Johannesburg.
