About Dr Christabella Latakgomo
She obtained her BA(SW) in 1996 at UNISA; her MA (Social Science) (Mental Health) in Community Development at UNISA in 2011 and her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Johannesburg in 2024. She also has a Diploma in Human Resource Management (cum laude) and a short course on Employee Assistance from the University of Pretoria, that she completed in 2010. She also holds a certificate in Postgraduate Supervision from Rhodes University and has produced 8 MA graduates since she joined UJ in 2012 and currently supervising 7 MA students and co-supervising a PhD candidate. She is assisting also with reviewing of BASW programmes and marking research reports/dissertations for universities. She is part of the U21 committee .
She joined UJ in 2012 after practicing as a Social Worker since 1997 (has over 27 years social work experience). She worked at AFM Welfare, SA Council for the Aged and Mamelodi Care for the Aged then proceeded to SAPS prior to joining UJ. She has experience as a generalist social worker including statutory cases . She practiced within the following fields: older persons, Occupational Social Work, Child, and Family Welfare. Working at SAPS she was more involved in Employee Wellness for over 5 years. She presented on substance misuse in three conferences in SA . At UJ she is responsible for teaching/facilitating INT 3 classes and 2nd year diversity module and Community Development Practice for third years. She is the overall coordinator for INT 3 and used to be the departmental overall Int coordinator. She is registered with SACSSP, member of ASASWEI and ASSWA.
Her research interests are: work with youth, disability & substance misuse, EAP, Community Development and Policy analysis.
