Deep & Early Earth Processes (DEEP) Research
The DEEP Research Group at UJ is coordinated by Prof Sebastian Tappe. The DEEP group investigates the formation and modification of the Earth’s mantle, which is often coupled with continental crust-mantle recycling. The DEEP group is interested in melting processes within the Earth’s mantle and particularly the formation of alkaline and carbonate-rich magmas (e.g. kimberlites, lamproites and carbonatites), and additionally, their roles within geochemical cycles. DEEP researchers have conducted petrological, geochemical and isotope studies of mantle rocks, xenoliths and xenocrysts. Moreover, both experimental and modelling studies on volatile-bearing mafic systems are in progress.
