Padraig Carmody, Richard Grant, Jennifer Lalley and Bram Bruscher
Prof Charles Mather, HOD of Geography at the Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada). He held a seminar in the department on Tuesday 26 July 2011 @ 13:30-15:00. Venue: D3Lab332. Title “Lively biogeographies” – South African contributions. It was facinating and certainly at the ‘cutting edge’ of human geographical studies.
Prof Mather holds a BA (Hons) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1985), a MA (with distinction) from the University of British Columbia (1988) and a PhD from Queen’s University, Kingston (1992). He has worked at Queen’s University (as a post doc) and held lecturing positions at the University of North West, Mafikeng and at the University of the Witwatersrand before moving on to Memorial University.
Dr Charlotte Lemanski, of University College, London. Dr Lemanski holds a BA Hons from the University of Durham, an MSc in Development Management from the University of London, a DPhil from the University of Oxford and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from University College London. She currently works as a lecturer at the University College, London but also held a post doc position at the University of Cape Town. She has three publications in press for 2011 so far.
Mr Bjorn Surborg of the University of British Columbia. He is working on this PhD, entitled: Going for gold: Johannesburg’s extractive industry sector in a global urban economy. He holds a BA from Ryerson University (Canada) and a MA from the University of British Columbia.
Prof James Smith, The Chair of African and Development Studies and Director of the Global Development Academy at the University of Edinburgh. Prof Smith holds an MA (Hons) from Dundee University (1995), and an MA (1998) and PhD (2001) from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was a post doctoral fellow at The University of the Witwatersrand. He also worked with Oxfam before moving to Edinburgh, first as a research fellow, in 2003.
