Annually, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) celebrates and awards exceptional South African female researchers. These awards are hosted in the month of August which is a month dedicated to celebrate women in commemoration of the brave women who marched to the union buildings on the 9th of August 1956, in protest against the extension of the then Pass Laws to women. In 2019, the South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA) were hosted by DSI on the 15th of August at The Boardwalk Hotel in Port Elizabeth and the theme of the event was making the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) work for women. Dr Banothile Makhubela received an award in the Distinguished Young Women Scientists – Natural (Physical & Life) & Engineering Sciences category. The Chemical Sciences Department (APK) wishes to congratulate Dr Makhubela for yet another outstanding award and thank her for continuing to put the Department and University of Johannesburg on the global scientific stage.
