The Department of Chemistry wishes to congratulate its staff member Dr Banothile Makhubela for being recognized as one of the top 200 young South Africans for the year 2017. The news and current affairs publisher Mail and Guardian releases an annual list of young South Africans that have shown incredible talent, dedication and positive contributions in their respective fields. Dr Makhubela was selected under the science and technology category for her research contributions in the field of chemistry. Her research interests are focused on the synthesis of organometallic complexes and their applications as potential medicinal drugs and catalysts in carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen coupling reactions. Furthermore, her research aims to develop catalytic technologies that can be used to convert biomass and other biomass-derived molecules into useful chemicals and fuels. Dr Makhubela has published 15 publications and has received numerous national and international awards for her scientific contributions. She is currently supervising 2 post-doctoral fellows, and 12 PhD and MSc students.
