Department of Chemical Sciences (DFC)
Chemistry is commonly referred to as the central science because it has such a great impact on our daily lives. Applied Chemistry, directly impacts on the quality of daily living through, for example, the determination of lead in fuel, determination of mercury in water or the analysis of various components in drinking water to ensure that it is safe for human consumption, quality control of manufactured products like headache tablets and gauging the suitability of raw materials required for the manufacture other products.
The Department of Chemical Sciences offers training from the basic level to advanced postgraduate levels as well as industrially relevant research.
Our research focus is on water research, analytical and environmental chemistry, nanomaterials, nanocomposites membranes, nanofibers and nanoceramics, phosphorus chemistry, electrochemistry, and computational chemistry.
