Academic Qualifications

Laurea, cum laude (Pisa); PhD (Southampton)

I have lived in Italy, England, Ireland and, since 2003, in South Africa, where I first came to take up a position as Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand. Along the way, I have developed research and teaching interests that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. They span critical theory, postcolonial and decolonial studies, translation, and culture, communication and the common. Among my edited and co-edited volumes are Traversing Transnationalism: The Horizons of Literary and Cultural Studies and Dossier: South Africa, a special issue of the US journal Mediations. I have recently published in, among others, Critical ArtsJournal of African Cultural Studies, Studi Culturali, CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture, Social Scientist and Journal of Postcolonial Writing. Right now, I am completing a project on the problematic of the border and the politics of translation. Titles of theses recently supervised include: Consuming (in) Exile: Young Zimbabweans Negotiating Agency and Identity in Johannesburg, South Africa; Cultural Villages in Post-apartheid South Africa: A Decolonial Perspective; The Rainbow Nation and Identity, a Coloured Story: A Reading of Chris van Wyk’s Shirley, Goodness and Mercy and Eggs to Lay, Chickens to Hatch; Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters and the Politics of Mediated Spectacle.
