The course is for students who have reached a required level of competence in the language. This is the start of a more independent stage where learners will be able to construct grammatically more complex sentences.

Advanced Mandarin (Module 1)

Course Summary

This course is designed for students who have completed Intermediate Mandarin or equivalent courses. Based on the Chinese language and culture knowledge students have gained in previous courses, Advanced Mandarin (Module 1) starts to move towards a more advanced level. The expectations for the students are for good communication skills in Mandarin (both spoken and written) for everyday life and work, in addition to appropriate communication strategies.

Teaching methods

The course is tutorial based with a combination of class activity and group work; use of audio-visual material as teaching aids (CDs and DVDs). Tutoring will be mostly in Chinese.

The course is organised thematically according to relevant function notions. Tutoring will be focused on the integration of skills necessary to advance students’ language skills in all areas including listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Supplementary material and homework is prepared by the teacher.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Have a good command of about 300 new Chinese words and expressions.
  • Grasp about 20 new communicative function items and 20 new grammar items.
  • Communicate using an enlarged vocabulary and more sentence patterns in areas of most immediate relevance.
  • Communicate more freely in particular social activities.
  • Tell stories, or describe past events with details in narrative ways.

Advanced Mandarin (Module 2)

Course Summary

This advanced course is the continuation of the previous course for students who have established good foundations in learning Chinese. By the end of the course students should have a relatively extensive vocabulary and be able to grasp more complex grammatical concepts and sentence structures. The content of the course will enable students to understand and express ideas and simple arguments clearly. In addition, the students can learn more about Chinese culture and customs.

The course is tutorial based with a combination of whole class activity and group work. Supplementary material and homework is prepared by the teacher.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Have a good command of about 300 new Chinese words and expressions.
  • Grasp about 30 new communicative function items and 30 new grammar items.
  • Understand frequently used sentences and expressions on common topics.
  • Express opinions more clearly in social activities and discussions.
