Centre for Anthropological Research and The University of Johannesburg logos

Established at the end of 2011, the Centre for Anthropological Research (CfAR) in the Faculty of humanities at the University of Johannesburg aims to conduct and disseminate high-quality research. Our research is done in the following working groups: urban worlds, indigenous knowledge, human biological and cultural origins, and research for policy. Each working group is coordinated by a CfAR staff member, and/or research associate, with the relevant experience in each thematic area. The centre is keen to establish, maintain and intensify partnerships with stakeholders at local, national, and international levels. We hope to foster research and experiential exchange for staff, associates and post-graduate students through our collaborations. We also strive to develop, and manage, extra-curricular courses pertaining to anthropological research and knowledge.

CfAR operates in the following working groups:

  •  Human Biological and Cultural Origins
  •  Urban Worlds
  •  Systematic Reviews
  •  Performance, Language and Popular Culture in Africa
