Dr Elina Hankela recently received her doctoral degree in Social Ethics from the University of Helsinki, Finland. During her doctoral studies Hankela spent two years in Gauteng, and after graduation joined the Department of Religion Studies at UJ as a postdoctoral research fellow. Hankela is interested in questions related to social justice in the context of faith communities, in particular, in contemporary urban South Africa. Her interests include the current meaning of liberation theologies, Christian responses to migration, and the potential in using anthropological methods in doing theology and social ethics. In her free time, Hankela enjoys good coffee and kickboxing.
