Bridging Programme in Finance

A student that either does not meet the pre-requisites for the B.Com Honours (Financial Planning, Investment Management, or Property Valuation and Management) or that is not accepted into the B.Com Honours (Financial Planning, Investment Management, or Property Valuation and Management) may be considered for study in the Bridging Programme in Finance.

Students MUST indicate on the application if they are applying for the Bridging Programme in Finance. The Bridging Programme is designed for students to obtain the necessary pre-requisites or improve their marks to reapply for the B.Com Honours (Financial Planning, Investment Management, or Property Valuation and Management). The Bridging Programme in Finance will also involve a selection process.

Quantitative Finance (Bridging Programme)

This short learning programme will provide prospective students from different theoretical backgrounds with an opportunity to study and enter a career in Quantitative Finance.  It also provides students who do not meet the stringent entry requirements into the future BCom Honours in Quantitative Finance programme an opportunity to improve their marks and gain entrance into BCom Honours in Quantitative Finance programme. This programme will provide students with a high-quality, theoretical and practical introduction, as well as knowledge of the important concepts and cognitive skills crucial for successful honour's studies.

Fundamentals of Treasury Practice

The Fundamentals of Treasury Practice, is a short learning programme with seven independent modules covered during the course of a year. The purpose of this short learning programme is to provide the student an opportunity to study in a field focused on Treasury Management. The student will then be able to apply the knowledge learnt in their working career in treasury management. This programme will broaden a student's knowledge and skills in the area of treasury and cash management to ensure efficient allocation of a company's cash resources necessary to maintain on-going activities. Applicants will be required to understand theoretical financial aspects of corporate treasury, while developing practical and strategic insights into treasury and risk management.

Applicants will gain a solid foundation in operations of treasury markets in the Southern Africa environment, global financial sectors and multinational companies.  Major areas of focus are principles and concepts corporate treasury management, the practical knowledge of financial instruments as well as the tools to analyse and manage financial and operational risks.

Introduction to Financial Market Operations

The Introduction to Financial Market Operations programme is a developed with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI)®. The Department of Finance and Investment Management will lecture the CISI® material so that students can write the CISI® exams. If the CISI® qualification modules are completed, students can obtain an international qualification that is recognised by 40 regulators around the world.

The purpose of the Introduction to Financial Market Operations short learning programme is to provide students with a solid introduction to financial markets as its operations. Upon completion of this short learning programme, students will be able to work in the operations and administration side of financial institutions.  This programme creates an opportunity for students who do not possess any undergraduate qualification that are currently working in the financial services industry the opportunity to obtain an internationally recognised qualification.

The Introduction to Financial Markets Operations is aimed at individuals entering the financial markets environment who need an introduction to the different markets in the environment as well as the financial instruments used in the markets.  The content also covers the fundamentals operations behind the instruments and markets.

In order to obtain international accreditation for modules passed students must obtain 70% the CISI® exams which are not part of the UJ short learning programme. This programme is designed to assist and prepare students for the CISI® exams
