B.Com Honours (Financial Planning)

The purpose of the BCom Honours (Financial Planning) programme is to strengthen the student's knowledge and comprehension in the disciplines of financial planning. The programme is comprised of a broad-based curriculum to prepare the post-graduate student for a wide range of financial planning specialities.
 
The curriculum includes seven topic areas ranging from tax planning, insurance and risk, retirement planning to estate planning. The programme emphasises application, analysis and evaluation within each topic area as well as the application of integrity and ethics in a professional environment.
 
The BCom Honours (Financial Planning) is accredited by the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI). Upon completion of the BCom Honours (Financial Planning) the student will be eligible to write the Professional Competence Examination (PCE). Once the exam has been passed along with the relevant work experience the student will qualify to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and become a member of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI).

B.Com Honours (Investment Management)

The purpose of this programme is to strengthen the student's knowledge of the discipline of investment valuation and portfolio management. The programme is comprised of a broad-based curriculum to prepare the student for a wide range of investment-related specialities.

The curriculum includes eight topic areas ranging from equity investment and interest-bearing investment to portfolio management and retirement finance. Mastering of the curriculum will provide students with the ability to synthesise complex investment principles and apply financial instruments in a professional manner.

Fundamental knowledge of global investment principles will be gained enabling the qualifying student to work in today's world of professional investing. The programme emphasises competence, integrity, and application of ethics in a professional environment. The successful students will gain a global investment perspective and an in-depth understanding of the global marketplace which will provide them with a competitive advantage for employment.

Candidates who are interested in doing the B.Com Honours (Investment Management) programme but did not complete Investment Management as a major in their undergraduate studies, maybe considered for the Honours programme subject to the successful completion of the Bridging Programme in Finance, and a selection process. The main purpose of the bridging modules is to ensure a smooth transition between a Bachelor's degree without Investment Management as a major and the B.Com Honours (Investment Management) programme.

B.Com Honours (Property Valuation and Management)

The purpose of the B.Com Honours (Property Valuation and Management) programme is to strengthen the student's knowledge and comprehension in the disciplines of property valuation and management. The programme is comprised of a broad-based curriculum to prepare the postgraduate student for a wide range of property -related specialities. The curriculum includes topic areas ranging from property valuation, property law, property finance and property management. The programme emphasises application, analysis and evaluation within each topic area as well as the application of integrity and ethics in a professional environment.

Mastering of the curriculum will provide students with the skills to synthesize complex valuation, management, financial and legal principles in order to add value to the entities that employ them. The successful student will gain an overall property valuation and property management perspective which will provide them with a competitive advantage for employment and prepare them for further studies in this field.

Candidates who are interested in doing the B.Com Honours (Property Valuation and Management) programme but did not complete Property Valuation and Management as a major in their undergraduate studies, maybe considered for the Honours programme subject to the successful completion of the Advanced Diploma Property Valuation and Management (NDip: Real Estate students) or the Bridging Programme in Finance (degree students) and a selection process.

The University of Johannesburg is an accredited service provider of The South African Council for the Property Valuers Profession (SACPVP). Students that comply with the necessary academic and internship requirement can register as Professional Property Valuers.

The University of Johannesburg have close ties with the South African Institute of Valuers – the South African Council for the Property Valuers Profession – and are working towards international accreditation for the valuation qualifications.

B.Com Honours (Quantitative Finance)

The purpose of the programme is to provide students with the required theoretical and practical training needed to understand and implement mathematical financial models. The programme is a vital qualification needed for entry into professional practice or management positions in the quantitative finance services industry.  The curriculum covered in the programme provides an in-depth groundwork for further learning and specialisation within financial engineering field and advanced quantitative finance. The provision of self-reflexive, scientifically trained professionals for the South African financial services industry builds our national, intellectual and economic infrastructure.

Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets

The purpose of the Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets is to develop the student's knowledge of the discipline of financial markets and trading. The programme is comprised of a focused curriculum to prepare the student for a career in financial markets. The curriculum includes ten topic areas ranging from Introduction to Financial Markets to Theory of Corporate Events to Trading in Financial Markets and Concluding Financial Market Transactions.

Mastering of the curriculum will provide students with the ability to synthesise financial market principles and apply financial instruments in a professional manner. Fundamental knowledge of global investments relevant to the financial market industry will be gained enabling the qualifying student to work in today's world of professional financial markets industry.

The programme emphasises competence, integrity, and application of ethics in a professional environment. The successful student will gain a global and South African financial market perspective and an in-depth understanding of the marketplace which will provide them with a competitive advantage for employment.

Advanced Diploma in Property Valuation and Management

The Advanced Diploma Property Valuation and Management offers progression for National Diploma: Real Estate students to NQF level 7 
Successful completion of this programme will provide students with property valuation and management knowledge and may lead to articulation into the B.Com Honours (Property Valuation and Management) programme.

The programme will also serve as entry level professional preparation for candidates with non-related bachelor's qualifications who want to register as Professional Property Valuer with the South-African Council for the Property Valuers Profession (SACPVP) as well as for people interested in improving their knowledge in property.

After the successful completion of the advance diploma in 2017 students may apply for the B.Com Honours (Property Valuation and Management) programme before the closing date on 30 September 2017.
