One of the strategic thrusts of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is to lead Africa into the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) was established in 2016 within the University to act as a catalyst towards the UJ Strategy for Global Excellence and Stature (GES). IIS is one of UJ's flagship institutes for Global Excellence and Stature (GES 4.0). In order to fulfil its vision of driving the university's industry 4.0 initiatives, IIS operates through three main facets - academic development, strategic research, and enterprise development. In its academic facet, the institute deals with the development of multidisciplinary taught and online programs for postgraduate qualification and continuing professional development, for the purpose of capacity building in the areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, Internet of Things (IoT) etc.
The institute will soon offer a Masters in Artificial Intelligence, Masters in Financial Engineering, and a short learning program in Computational Intelligence. IIS also has ongoing research in strategic focus areas aligned to industry 4.0. Some of the areas in which research is being currently done are – Cyber Physical Systems, Optimization, Predictive Maintenance, Controls, Communication etc. IIS's enterprise facet works with industry and government entities in solving their problems using state-of-the-art innovations. IIS, together with the Technology Transfer Office, also foresees the generation of start-up and support to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). IIS also host the Center for Telecommunication (CfT). Telecommunications is an extremely wide field and to date CfT has focused on conducting both fundamental and applied research on cutting edge topics in Information Theory, Power Line Communication and Visible Light Communication. IIS regularly hosts researchers of international repute to carry out collaborative research work.
