Learning Cognition and Development

Home » Faculty of Education » Learning Cognition and Development

We focus on the broad topics cognition and learning as they apply in educational situations. We particularly cater for students in Education and Psychology who want to extend their knowledge of human intellectual functioning and processes of learning in educational settings. We are also deeply concerned with social change as an imperative, and the development of human resources in the South African setting. As such, we are constantly reviewing our views on cognition and learning from socio-cultural perspectives, as well as through the development of more applicable and locally-valid perspectives to make our work more responsive and relevant. In our studies, we extensively read the work of relevant traditional researchers, particularly Lev Vygotsky, as well as extensions of his work by Bransford, Brown and others, as well as contemporary writers like Bereiter and Lemke.
