Purpose

Graphic and Communication Design entails a mix of technical understanding, superb communication and visual experimentation. Students are prepared for multidisciplinary creative careers or postgraduate studies in an ever-evolving design world. This programme prepares students for a communication design career by innovatively applying integrated knowledge and advanced conceptual thinking skills to solve complex communication design problems. Students learn to use various design methods, software, processes and techniques competently to create, present and argue for professional communication designs. Students also learn to demonstrate knowledge of design history and theory and to conduct design criticism and research.

Career Opportunities

Communication Designers are creative thinkers and problem solvers who use a range of design methods, processes and techniques to create professional communication designs, such as posters, books, magazines, corporate identity programmes, packaging and web sites, both individually and as members of teams.

Admission Requirements

A minimum APS of 25 with Mathematics or 26 with Mathematical Literacy. English 5 (60%+),  Mathematics 3 (40%+) or Mathematical Literacy 4 (50%+)

Selection Process

In addition to the minimum admission requirements as outlined above, prospective students must submit a prescribed portfolio containing a number of set tasks (www.uj.ac.za/fada). The tasks are constructed to determine the suitability of the applicant and are described clearly and contain explicit assessment criteria. Successful portfolios are selected as follows: Portfolios are assessed by a panel of departmental assessors according to the specified assessment criteria. Applicants who are competent in all tasks and projects are admitted. Applicants who are not competent in all tasks and projects are not admitted. Applicants who are competent in some but not all tasks and projects are re-assessed and admitted, based on the highest number of competent tasks and projects in a descending order. In the abovementioned group of portfolios, previously disadvantaged applicants and applicants with high M and APS-scores are given preference. If all submitted portfolios are assessed as competent, portfolios that demonstrate best practice will be admitted in order of merit, based on the number of seats available. Applicants are informed in writing of the portfolio assessment, after which the portfolios may be collected. Uncollected portfolios are discarded on the official closing date of the University. Applicants who are not admitted, may request to receive feedback regarding their unsuccessful submission.
