Sport Science

The unit's role with in the Athlete Support is to provide the following services to the Student-athlete and coaching staff:

  • Identify the scope of Sport Science needs within the High Performance sporting codes along with Coaches and Managers
  • Implement an Athlete support programme with the medical services as per the high performance sporting code's needs.
  • Manage the execution and progress of the periodized plan within each high performance sporting code to and make adjustments as necessary to ensure success.
  • Meet with coaches and sport managers to identify the specific needs for the sporting code leading up to major tournaments such as USSA, Varsity Sport and regional tournaments.

Daily services provided throughout the season:

  • Sport specific testing & analysis of data
  • Strength & conditioning gym based sessions
  • Field strength & conditioning sessions
  • Support services at league matches and tournaments
  • Programme design and implementation
  • Injury prevention and management
  • Provide recovery modalities

Sporting codes responsible: UJ Cricket Team

Impressive relevant achievements:
  • MPhil degree in Sports Science, UJ.
  • He was part of the UJ Track and Field Team that won USSA (2015), UJ Cross-Country Team that won USSA (2018) and Varsity Cup (2016).
  •  Also, part of UJ Basketball Team that won USSA Championship in (2019) and UJ Cricket Team 2nd place Varsity Cup (2019).

Name: Kelvin Mandla Ndlomo

Position:  UJ Football Sport Scientist
Sporting codes responsible: UJ Football development teams, UJ men’s first team and UJ women’s national league team.

Sporting codes responsible for: University of Johannesburg 1st team netball and Women's Rugby.

 Impressive relevant achievements

  • Was the 2018 Golden Lions u/18 girls Strength and Conditioning Coach for their National Girls' Week/ Craven Week.
  • Worked with all the female rugby players that played for UJ,as both student athletes and club members prior to their national 7s and under 20 call ups.
  • Assisted the South African Women's 7s Rugby Team's technical team with testing for the Gauteng leg of "Becoming Imbokodo", which was held at Loftus Stadium in 2019.

  • Selected to be a part of the National USSA (University Sport South African) High Performance committee, who selected the team who represented us at the World student games (2018-present)
  • Appointed the strength and conditioning coach for the National u17 South African Women's Football team for the u17 FIFA Women's World cup 2018 in Uruguay.
