Staff and students bid Prof Rensburg farewell, welcome Prof Marwala at Campus Engagements
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UJ, Prof Ihron Rensburg held his final 2017 staff and student engagements across the four UJ campuses during September and October.
Staff and students expressed their heartfelt messages commending Prof Rensburg’s visionary leadership. Prof Rensburg was described as “a man of compassion, a business leader, a father, change agent, a man of integrity, and someone with a pragmatic approach to issues.” Over the years, student leaders have worked closely with Prof Rensburg, thus, their messages to him reflected the bond that they shared with the Vice-Chancellor while working on student matters.
Staff’s messages to Prof Rensburg highlighted the support that they received in various ways on a variety of projects in the University’s development since its formation from the legacy institutions that resulted in the merger. During his tenure, there have been a number of positive developments. The Library and Information Centre has expanded in many ways; there have been refurbishments of the Soweto and the Doornfontein campuses; there has been a transformation of the academic staff complement; successful fundraising initiatives such as the Missing Middle Fund and the Meal Assistance Scheme for students; the insourcing of outsourced workers; the massive growth in research output; and UJ’s elevated reputation in world university rankings, were some of the major achievements that were mentioned.
This is Prof Rensburg’s last year as the VC of UJ while it is the beginning of a new chapter for Prof Marwala as he prepares to take the reigns at the University.
