Dr EJ (Ernst) Marais is a senior lecturer in the Department of Private Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Johannesburg and teaches property law. He is an alumnus of the South African Research Chair in Property Law, where he obtained his LLD in 2011.
His research interests include property law and constitutional property law, specifically the areas of acquisitive prescription and expropriation law. He completed two postdoctoral research fellowships, one in 2012 at the South African Research Chair in Property Law, Stellenbosch University, with Prof André van der Walt and the second in 2013 at the University of Cape Town with Prof Hanri Mostert. In 2014 he helped co-organise a colloquium on expropriation law at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) and also co-organised the third instalment of the Young Property Lawyers Forum, which took place at Stellenbosch University in 2012.
Dr Marais is a member of the Expert Group on Expropriation Law and is a co-editor, along with Dr Bram Akkermans (University of Maastricht) and Dr Eveline Raemakers (Wadham College, Oxford), of Property Law Perspectives II (2013) Antwerp: Intersentia.
