Alumni News, May 2016: Edition 10

First and foremost, we want to welcome our newest alumni. You are now part of a worldwide group of professionals and leaders in their field. We encourage you to join our UJ Alumni Network and Affinity Groups. In doing so, you play an active part in your Alma Mater and in our shared future.

To celebrate the record number of 9 000 students that graduated during the first graduation ceremonies of 2016 we find it fitting to use this edition to highlight some of the strides that our Alumni and the University itself are making towards a brighter future for all in South Africa and globally.

During the Autumn Graduation Ceremonies UJ conferred an honorary doctoral degree on Liberation activist Prof John Shannon Saul, whose work has focused on the liberation struggles of southern Africa, from the 1960's. We highlight how his dedication and decades of commitment contributed to the attainment of full freedom in southern Africa.

The University also honoured two Alumni in March who use their unique talents to inspire and uplift with the coveted Dignitas Awards. The award is presented to our Alumni that make significant contributions in society. Click on the video links below to see interviews with the ever soulful Ms. Simphiwe Dana and the adventurous Mr. Alex Harris. We also include a call for Dignitas 2016 nominee submissions and urge you to assist us to honour our most illustrious Alumni through your nomination.

UJ is committed to global excellence and has partnered with international organisations to bring two thought leading conferences to South Africa in 2016. In answer to the mounting food security crisis that faces Southern Africa, UJ, in partnership with the Human Science Research Council (HSRC); and Agricultural Research Council (ARC), will host the maiden edition of the 2016 International conference on Food Security and Safety (FSaS) in May. June will see UJ making history as its Alumni Network joins up with Yale University for the first Pan-African Alumni Leadership Exchange Conference.

We hope that you enjoy these and other articles that highlight the phenomenal achievements of UJ Alumni and the University and that it serves as inspiration on your journey to success.
