The Global Excellence and Stature (GES) initiative was launched in 2014 to position the University of Johannesburg (UJ) as the Pan-African epicentre of critical intellectual inquiry. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to support the University in sustaining academic excellence for global competitiveness and prominence. In 2017/2018, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal (VC), Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, introduced the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) to UJ. It is envisaged that 4IR will add significant impetus to UJ's vision for attaining global excellence and stature. This has resulted in the quest for GES 4.0, which will build on GES 1.0. The University's approach to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has a Pan-African bent to underscore the need for Africa to rise to the challenges attendant to 4IR.
Through the GES initiative, UJ seeks to appoint distinguished professors (DPs) to generate research and nurture the next generation of academics. These top professors will help establish strategic networks for improved research excellence, while contributing to expanding the global footprint of UJ. The University has appointed eight distinguished professors.
